“We all come from the stars”
An interview with an beautiful elderly Couple married for 50 years…..
John and Cecilia met when they were 18 and haven’t wanted to spend a day apart since getting married. Originally Cecilia stood John up for their first date. Heartbroken he refused to give up. Unaware of where to find her he commenced knocking on doors where they lived in Maidenhead, England in a desperate hope to find her. Eventually he came across the right door.
They have now been together for 50 years and when talking to them about their lives together it was soon apparent that they were still in love. At times they would get lost in the moment whilst recollecting the past and would get caught in playful gestures like two sweethearts in their youth.
John considers himself to be a sensitive man and a psychic. He comes from a long line of physics in his family. Both Cecilia and John used to talk to the dead through the use of a weegie board and they both believe in reincarnation.
They hold group meditation classes weekly, believe in spiritual healing and have meditated for over 40 years. Their philosophy is to listen to the deepest part of their being and to cooperate with nature and each other. Part of the secret to their happiness in their lives is to be their own director and listen to their hearts.
Sadly John was diagnosed with a brain tumor in 1994. It was explained to him that the tumor could be removed either by cutting his head open or extracting it through his nasal passage. He sat down over a coffee with Cecilia and they decided the best course of action would be to travel to India to visit a Swami they knew of who may be able to cure him through his blessings. They had an adventurous life and had visited India may times before so the idea of going to India was not such a foreign thing to them.
John has survived this long, however he is losing his sight and Cecilia is having to take on the role as his carer which she explained has been very trying at times. She stated “I just can’t envision myself leaving him regardless of what happens or what the consequences are”.
Their secret to a successful long‐lasting relationship, “Because we have a similar out‐look on life and similar way of thinking the connection is strong. We feel as though we never want to be apart and love each other dearly. We don’t believe there is anybody else out there for us and the attraction runs much deeper than just the physical”.
Memories of India
I will never forget the overwhelming feeling I had when I first set eyes upon this magnificent and majestic building. A feeling of harmony and warmth resonates inside of me. I remember arriving during the day and staying until the sun had set. As I sat in the garden, I watched the colours of the marble change from white to blue and pink as the colours in the sky changed.

Multimedia Piece
Everybody has a story and life can change suddenly. For one of my final folio pieces at RMIT I wanted to tell a story of a person who has come to Australia because their own country is no longer safe to live in. I chose this topic as I feel lucky to be living in Australia. I realised this after traveling through some poverty-stricken countries and working overseas myself. I love how my years of traveling really opened up my mind!
I was lucky enough to meet this lady after asking around, trying to find somebody who has migrated here and would participate in this project. Admittedly creating a multimedia piece was not as easy as I thought it would be. I had so many things to consider beyond what is required for a stills photographer. It took months of molding and shaping the story to get it to this point. And the audio! That was hard. I had one and a half hours of voice recorded and needed to cut it down to five minutes to make the point I wanted.
My final assessment time at RMIT included two photojournalist and three regular teachers on the panel. The feedback was positive, one even commenting on how I have put this piece together with such sensitivity. What a great success! I am now looking at making more of these multimedia pieces and hope to find more interesting people to participate. So stay tuned!
